Illinois lease lead disclosure checklist (2026)

Short answer: before every new lease on a pre-1978 Illinois rental, give the tenant the federal disclosure package and the Illinois lead brochure. There is no routine statewide certificate to renew — the lease date is the deadline that matters.

Lease-day checklist

  1. ☐ Confirm the unit was built before 1978 (disclosure applies to pre-1978 housing).
  2. ☐ Federal lead disclosure form + Lead Warning Statement in the lease (EPA)
  3. ☐ EPA pamphlet “Protect Your Family From Lead in Your Home” (EPA)
  4. ☐ Illinois lead poisoning brochure (77 Ill. Adm. Code 845.25(b))
  5. ☐ If a mitigation notice was ever issued: written prior-hazard notice (inspection report + mitigation notice + certificate of compliance satisfy this) (845.25(a))
  6. ☐ Keep signed copies (federal rule: 3 years of disclosure records).
  7. ☐ Log the lease start in free Deadline Autopilot / tracker so the next turnover is not a surprise.

No. We found no routine statewide or Naperville/Chicago/Evanston rental lead certificate. The recurring duty is disclosure at each lease; inspections are triggered.
